What Happens (Spoilers)

So, the story kicks off with a bunch of new, hi-tech Buzz Lightyear toys getting shipwrecked on a deserted island. They’re stuck in "demo mode" and decide to follow the North Star to get back to "Star Command." Meanwhile, Bonnie, who’s now eight, gets a frog-themed tablet called Lilypad, or "Lily," from her parents. They hope it’ll help her make friends, but Bonnie quickly gets obsessed with Lily and starts ignoring her old toys.

Jessie, who’s now Bonnie’s favorite toy and their leader, tries to explain to Lily that Bonnie needs real friends. Lily tries to help by sending a friend request to Chelsea, one of Bonnie's classmates, on social media. Jessie gets worried about losing Bonnie’s love, so she calls Woody on a walkie-talkie for advice. Woody, who’s been helping Bo Peep find homes for other abandoned toys, decides to come back to Bonnie, thinking Jessie needs his help.

When Chelsea invites Bonnie to a sleepover, Jessie and Bullseye sneak into Bonnie’s suitcase, and Bonnie brings Lily along. At first, Bonnie is happy to have them, but after Chelsea and her friends, Heidi and Kara, tease Bonnie for still playing with toys, Bonnie’s dad takes Jessie and Bullseye home. Jessie and Bullseye escape and are found by an old couple. The couple sees an old address on Jessie's chaps and takes them to the farmhouse of her original owner, Emily.

There, Jessie ends up in a shed with other forgotten toys, including a potty-training toy called Smarty Pants. As they search for Bullseye, Jessie meets a GPS toy named Atlas and a camera toy named Snappy. They tell her that a new family, the Manoukians – with a little girl named Blaze – now live at the farmhouse. Jessie has a wonderful playtime with the imaginative Blaze and decides to try and get Bonnie and Blaze to become friends.

Back with Bonnie, Woody reunites with her other toys. They confront Lily about Jessie’s disappearance. Lily, thinking the toys are bad for Bonnie’s social life, tricks Bonnie’s dad into putting them in storage. Woody and Buzz escape this fate. At the farmhouse, Jessie works with the device toys to send a picture of herself to Bonnie, pretending it’s from Blaze. Woody and Buzz discover that Lily’s weakness is her speech recognition. They yell her name, forcing her to show the picture to Bonnie so Bonnie can go get Jessie. Woody and Buzz secretly hitch a ride with Bonnie and her mom to the Manoukians' farmhouse. But when they arrive, Bonnie rejects Blaze’s offer to give Jessie and Bullseye back after seeing messages in a group chat where Chelsea, Heidi, and Kara made fun of her for playing with toys.

Jessie is really sad and goes to a tree where Emily used to play with her. She finds a buried lunchbox full of old things from the late 20th century, along with photos of an adult Emily and her daughter, who is also named Jessie. This makes Jessie realize she had a lasting impact on Emily's life, and she gets her faith in Bonnie back. Meanwhile, Woody and Buzz meet the shipwrecked Buzz units, who landed nearby, and help them understand their true purpose as toys. With their help, and the device toys, Jessie tracks down Lily, who has boarded a donation truck, feeling guilty about hurting Bonnie. Jessie and the others catch up to the truck and convince Lily to help Bonnie and Blaze become friends. Buzz tells Jessie he loves her, and they share a kiss!

The toys and devices then set up a new meeting for Bonnie and Blaze. After a little hesitation, the girls bond over their love for toys. They play together and even pretend to marry Jessie and Buzz. Woody watches happily before he leaves with Bo. In the end, each of the Buzz units finds new homes with different children at a school playground.
