What Happens (Spoilers)

The story begins in 1982, introducing us to Denise Platt, an aspiring novelist, her husband Greg, their children Audrey and Brian, and their dog, Starbuck, all living on Oak Street. Their marriage is a bit rocky; Denise is secretly thinking about divorce, and Greg has lost his regular job, working odd jobs and delivering pizzas to make ends meet. Denise is writing a novel, and her neighbor, Mrs. Huddleston, is helping her edit it. One day, Denise photographs a mysterious plant in Mrs. Huddleston's yard. At the library, Mrs. Valcourt, the librarian, identifies it as a species that went extinct millions of years ago. Meanwhile, their neighbor, Mel, is annoyed because Starbuck keeps messing up his yard, and then a mysterious pile of animal waste appears in Mel's yard, which he thinks is a prank. Radio news reports start talking about increased solar flare activity.

Then, during a storm, as Greg returns from a pizza delivery, a huge white light engulfs Oak Street. There's a sudden change in air pressure and a power outage. The next morning, Denise and Greg discover that Starbuck is missing. When they go outside to look for him, they find that Oak Street is now surrounded by a prehistoric landscape, complete with dinosaurs that start attacking people. They quickly board up their house, but their basement floods, destroying Denise's novel manuscript. Their daughter, Audrey, figures out that the flashes of light were wormholes that sent their entire neighborhood millions of years into the past.

That night, Greg admits he knows Denise is considering divorce because he read her novel draft, and he also confesses about losing his job. Brian then sees Starbuck outside his window and goes out to find him, with Audrey joining him. Sadly, Mel is killed by pterodactyls. The children meet Jeannette Christiansen, Brian's neighborhood crush, who joins them after her parents are killed. Elsewhere, Denise and Greg, while searching for their kids, see a flash of light and follow it to a house where they find a wormhole. They refuse to leave without their children, and the wormhole vanishes. Dinosaurs chase them, but they manage to hide in a car, reconcile, and finally reunite with their kids.

The next morning, an Allosaurus attacks the group. Greg bravely sacrifices himself to protect everyone else, allowing them to escape. They see the wormhole again, this time above Mrs. Valcourt's house, and climb onto the roof. They realize the wormhole appears and disappears at regular intervals. Jeannette jumps into it and vanishes. Brian tries to follow but misses, falling. A pterosaur grabs him, but Starbuck appears and attacks the creature. The group tries to take shelter inside Mrs. Valcourt's house, but it's full of pseudosuchians (ancient crocodile-like reptiles). Mrs. Valcourt emerges from hiding, manages to kill one, but is then killed by the others. Escaping back to the roof, the remaining group finally jumps into the wormhole.

They return to 1982, about twenty minutes before Oak Street was first teleported. Jeannette immediately runs to warn her parents. Denise uses a public phone to call many Oak Street residents, including Mrs. Huddleston, Mrs. Valcourt, and Mel, urging them to leave before the white light appears. She also tells Greg to make his next pizza delivery to a distant bus stop. When Greg arrives at the bus stop, Denise and their children embrace him. The white light appears again, engulfing the suburb, and Oak Street disappears, replaced by the prehistoric landscape once more.

Two years later, the military has secured the area, with scientists studying the prehistoric environment, its wildlife, and the mystery of the wormholes. Denise has become a hero for warning the residents, and she has published a book based on her experiences, titled "The End of Oak Street."
