What Happens (Spoilers)

The movie kicks off in 2032 with Ryland Grace, a former molecular biologist turned middle school teacher, waking up from a coma on a spaceship called the Hail Mary. He has amnesia and soon learns he's the only survivor of a three-person crew heading towards the Tau Ceti star system, which is very far from Earth.

Through a series of flashbacks, Grace starts to remember why he's there. Scientists on Earth discovered a strange line of infrared light, dubbed the "Petrova line," stretching from the Sun to Venus. Inside this line was a substance called "astrophage," which was rapidly growing on the Sun's surface, causing it to dim. Experts predicted this would lead to catastrophic global cooling within thirty years, basically freezing Earth solid. Eva Stratt, the determined head of the Petrova Taskforce, recruited Grace because of his unique background in speculative astrobiology. Grace soon found out that astrophage were tiny, single-celled organisms that absorbed the Sun's energy and used it to move around.

Stratt then brought Grace into "Project Hail Mary," a desperate, international mission. The plan was to send a crewed spacecraft to Tau Ceti, the only nearby star not affected by the astrophage. It was a one-way trip, a suicide mission, as the ship only had enough fuel to get there. Any important findings would have to be sent back to Earth in smaller probes. Grace initially tried to decline out of fear after an astrophage explosion killed the original science officers, but Stratt, believing he was the only one capable, had him drugged and put aboard the ship.

In the present, Grace has an incredible encounter: another spacecraft docks with the Hail Mary! It's made of a solid form of xenon, which Grace calls xenonite. The occupant is a fascinating, rock-like, five-legged alien from a planet in the 40 Eridani A system. Grace names him "Rocky." He figures out that Eridians "see" using echolocation, like bats, and manages to build a machine to translate Rocky's musical language into English. Rocky turns out to be a mechanical engineer and, just like Grace, the sole survivor of his own people's mission to save their star from astrophage. Grace and Rocky quickly become close friends and decide to work together. Since neither can survive in the other's atmosphere, Rocky stays inside a pressurized xenonite ball on the Hail Mary.

Together, they study the Petrova line around a planet in the Tau Ceti system, which Grace names "Adrian." They discover that Adrian's atmosphere is home to an entire microbial ecosystem, which includes tiny organisms that are consuming the astrophage, keeping its population under control. Rocky theorizes these "taumoeba" are the key. Knowing Grace can't get home, Rocky generously agrees to share some of his ship's astrophage fuel with the Hail Mary.

During a risky maneuver to collect the taumoeba from Adrian's atmosphere, a fuel leak causes the Hail Mary to spin wildly, knocking Grace unconscious. Rocky, without hesitation, breaks out of his protective ball to save Grace, suffering severe injuries in the process. While Rocky recovers, Grace studies the captured taumoeba, successfully breeding them to survive in Venus's nitrogen-rich atmosphere, which is essential for Earth's plan. Rocky revives, and they celebrate their success.

Rocky and Grace share an emotional goodbye as they begin their separate journeys back to their home systems. However, Grace soon discovers a horrifying problem: the taumoeba he's carrying have evolved! They're escaping their xenonite breeding tanks and starting to eat the Hail Mary's astrophage fuel. Grace manages to stop the leak, but then he realizes that Rocky's entire ship is made of xenonite, meaning it has no way to contain the evolved taumoeba. This would eat all of Rocky's fuel, stranding him and dooming his home planet, Erid.

In a profound act of self-sacrifice, Grace decides to use his remaining fuel to rescue Rocky and the Eridians rather than return home to Earth. He sends his video logs and the taumoeba samples back to Earth via the probes. On Earth, Stratt and her team receive the probes and successfully use the taumoeba to cure the Sun's astrophage infection, saving humanity. Meanwhile, on Erid, Grace lives in a special Earth-like biodome built for him by the Eridians. Rocky eventually tells him that Eridian scientists can prepare the Hail Mary for the return journey to Earth. Grace ponders this news as he begins another day, teaching science to Eridian children.
