What Happens (Spoilers)

Okay, let's dive into the scary stuff! The movie kicks off with Gemma, a single mum to Maya, who loves dogs and their neighbours. Gemma's past is pretty dark; her mother, who was distant, died by suicide right in front of her. Gemma inherits her mother's house and keeps her belongings, determined not to become like her, and she tries to shield Maya from her grandmother's story. But things get weird fast. After Maya discards some toys, Gemma stores them with her mother's things, and that night, Gemma dreams of being chased by ghosts.

The next day, Gemma and Maya run into three sinister elderly people, and their neighbour Radar, a dog, reacts aggressively to them. Gemma then has a nightmare where demons chase her through a maze, and one pricks her hand with a badge pin. She wakes up holding the pin, which she discusses with her boyfriend, Nick, a policeman, who thinks the house might be stressing her out. At her clinic, Gemma treats one of the elderly men and freaks out when his X-ray shows rotting teeth, hair, and a second set of teeth!

Gemma gets pulled into more nightmares, tortured by demons, until an elderly woman named Elise rescues her and gives her a book. At a tattoo shop, a medium named Claire lets Elise possess her. Elise explains that Gemma is a "courier," meaning she can go into the Further, where dead souls live, and also move objects between that world and ours. An evil soul, Cyrus, has noticed Gemma’s ability and wants to use her to come back to life. The three creepy elderly people are his Acolytes, helping him in the real world. Claire sees a terrifying future where Maya and Nick are killed, and the world is taken over by the dead.

Things escalate when Gemma accidentally brings a dead soul into the real world. Maya’s talking cactus even starts speaking with Cyrus’s voice! Maya also sees the Acolytes at the Sullivans' house. When Gemma and Nick investigate, they find recordings of Cyrus Lam, a cult leader who promised his followers resurrection. Gemma learns that Cyrus plans to bring all his dead followers back through her. Claire reveals that the Acolytes guard a Red Door in the Further, which could trap Cyrus forever. Their plan is to lure him through it while Nick distracts the Acolytes.

Gemma enters the Further with Claire and Elise and makes a shocking discovery: her own mother was also a courier. Cyrus had tormented her too, trying to get into the real world, but her mother trapped him in her memories by holding his hand as she killed herself. Elise and Gemma then realize that Maya has also inherited the courier ability.

Soon after, Cyrus captures Maya and uses her to return to the real world, killing Radar's owner. Maya escapes with Radar, but Cyrus finds her and forces her to resurrect many dead souls, leaving her near death. Gemma returns to protect her but is overwhelmed by the resurrected dead. Claire revives Nick, while Elise, from the Further, controls the last Acolyte to protect Maya. Sadly, Cyrus kills all three Acolytes.

Gemma battles Cyrus, then transports her entire house into the Further. The resurrected dead, furious that Cyrus failed to fully restore them, attack and consume him. This allows Gemma to return safely. She restores the house and is reunited with Maya and Nick. In a scene after the credits, Cyrus is seen strapped to a dental chair in the Further, being tortured with a drill by the very dentist who treated him earlier. Talk about a twisted ending for the villain!
