What Happens (Spoilers)

The story kicks off at a lakehouse, where Joseph Price is researching his late grandfather Benjamin's work on the Necronomicon and Deadites. He uncovers the Kandarian Dagger, which Benjamin believed could destroy these evil beings. Soon, a Deadite named Jessica appears, murdering two fishermen before heading straight for Joseph. Meanwhile, Joseph's brother Will has a drunken fight with his wife Alice, drives off, and crashes directly into Jessica. Will tragically burns to death in the car, but Jessica, before being fully destroyed, recites a passage from the Necronomicon, passing the Deadite possession to Will.

Some time later, the family — Alice, Joseph, his girlfriend Thya, his parents Susan and Edgar, and grandmother Polly — reunite for Will's cremation. Alice is having a tough time, as Susan and Edgar blame her for the crash. Before the cremation, Edgar secretly visits Will's coffin. Suddenly, Deadite Will bursts out, burns Edgar, and kills the cremator. The family returns to the lake house, where Edgar slowly starts to succumb to the Deadite possession.

During a very tense dinner, Edgar stabs the family dog, Max, to death and then collapses. Joseph and Thya try to drive him to the hospital, but Edgar crashes the car, murders Thya, and Joseph barely escapes. Back at the house, Alice stumbles upon Benjamin's research and almost reads from the Necronomicon herself before she's attacked by a now-possessed Max.

Joseph makes it back to the house, only for Deadite Thya to suddenly appear. The family manages to lock her in the basement. They try to escape, but Edgar and Max confront them, forcing them to retreat and barricade the house. However, Thya tricks Polly into letting her out. Thya then brutally attacks the entire family, desperately searching for the dagger. Joseph manages to kill Thya. But after her encounter, Polly becomes possessed. She manipulates a traumatized Susan into letting Deadite Edgar back inside. Susan kisses Edgar, starting to get possessed herself, and tries to convince Joseph to reveal the dagger's location.

Edgar attacks the family, breaking a promise he made to Susan to leave Joseph alone. Alice hides during the chaos and has painful flashbacks of Will's abuse during their marriage. She arms herself with a rotary saw and finds Susan, but is ambushed by Polly. Polly deafens Alice's right ear, but Alice manages to subdue Polly using a stair lift. Joseph, badly wounded by Edgar, dies. Alice and Susan flee to the bathroom. Alice ties Susan up and confronts her about Will's abusive past. Susan admits her hatred for Alice and becomes fully possessed. Alice fights her off and escapes to the attic, where she finally finds the Kandarian dagger. Deadite Joseph attacks her, but Alice uses the dagger to kill him, releasing his body from possession.

Alice flees to the roof, pursued by Susan and Edgar, but drops the dagger. She climbs back into the house through the chimney, manages to decapitate Susan and fatally wound Edgar with the saw, before setting the house on fire. Alice kills Max with the dagger before collapsing. Will then arrives at the burning house and pursues Alice to a nearby building site. After a long, brutal struggle, Alice manages to trap Will in a pit filled with tar and finally kills him with a jackhammer and the dagger. Paramedics arrive as the sun rises and rescue a battered Alice.

In a mid-credit scene, we see that the still-possessed Polly managed to escape the burning house. She's found by a motorist, crawling away, and scratches the motorist's leg, passing on the Deadite possession. And in a post-credit scene, the daughter of the crematorium manager finds Ellie Bixler's unclaimed ashes, before Deadite Ellie emerges and kills her.
