What Happens (Spoilers)

The movie kicks off in 1966, showing us Joseph Jackson, a steel worker, putting his sons Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael together to form The Jackson 5. Young Michael is the lead singer, and we see them go through tough, grueling rehearsals, often involving corporal punishment from Joseph. They perform at various gigs until 1968 when Suzanne De Passe discovers them in Chicago. A year later, they sign with Motown. The Jackson 5 quickly become huge, with their albums topping charts and concerts selling out across the US. This success allows the family to move from their small house in Gary, Indiana, to the grand Hayvenhurst mansion in Encino, California, by 1971. Motown founder Berry Gordy already sees Michael's immense potential as a solo artist.

Fast forward to 1978, Michael takes a big step, signing with Epic Records for his first solo album as an adult, "Off the Wall," produced by the legendary Quincy Jones. Even with its success, Michael's solo career faces hurdles because Joseph still believes he controls all his children's careers. Michael is forced to keep touring with his brothers on the Triumph Tour. During this time, Michael starts feeling insecure about his looks and develops vitiligo. He decides to get a rhinoplasty to make his nose smaller. After a major argument with Joseph, Michael gets some crucial advice from his bodyguard and close friend, Bill Bray, which inspires him to forge his own path. In 1981, he hires John Branca as his attorney, and Branca, on Michael's behalf, fires Joseph by fax.

With a new sense of independence, Michael visits children's hospitals and starts experimenting with ideas for his next album, set for release in 1982. He watches a news report about the Crips–Bloods gang war and gets a groundbreaking idea: he hires members from both gangs to appear in his music video for "Beat It." This album, "Thriller," breaks worldwide sales records, and Michael delivers a truly iconic performance of "Billie Jean" at Motown 25. Michael and Branca then head to New York with a mission: to convince CBS Records president Walter Yetnikoff to make MTV play Michael's music videos, as the network at the time wasn't playing videos by black artists. Yetnikoff, after threatening to pull the entire CBS Records catalog from the network, successfully gets MTV to agree to give Michael airtime.

While Michael is enjoying his incredible success, Joseph isn't out of the picture. He meets with boxing promoter Don King and proposes a 1984 Victory Tour to reunite his sons. King offers Joseph a PepsiCo sponsorship deal, but only if Michael agrees to tour with The Jacksons, which Michael objects to. Despite his objections, the Jacksons proceed to film a Pepsi commercial. During the filming, a spark from the pyrotechnics accidentally sets Michael's hair on fire, resulting in third-degree burns and nerve damage. Michael and Branca sue PepsiCo for damages, with the settlement proceeds generously going to the burn center where he was treated. In the hospital, Michael meets with other patients, reflecting on whether to take part in the Victory Tour.

Once Michael recovers, he agrees to tour with his siblings. During the final show at Dodger Stadium, they perform "Human Nature" and "Working Day and Night." It's a powerful moment when Michael announces that this will be the last time The Jacksons perform together, officially severing his ties with Joseph, much to Joseph's horror. The movie concludes in 1988 with Michael performing his first solo tour, the Bad World Tour, at Wembley Stadium to an ecstatic, roaring crowd, cementing his status as a global superstar in his own right.
