Let's dive into what happens in "The Breadwinner." Nate Wilcox is a top employee at a car dealership, while his wife, Katie, is a stay-at-home mom to their three daughters: Gracie, Hadley, and Sam. Katie invents the "Star Minder" for her girls and lands a deal for it on Shark Tank.
To start producing the Star Minder, Katie must travel to South Korea for two weeks. This requires Nate to take leave from his job and become a stay-at-home dad. Nate soon realizes the difficulties of domestic life, struggling to keep up with daily cooking, cleaning, laundry, and taking care of his daughters. During this time, Nate befriends Peter, a delivery guy, and Keegan Jones, a contractor who is terrible at his job. Fellow stay-at-home dad Conor Ashford tries to befriend Nate, but Nate ignores him. When Nate asks his mother to help, his father, Walter, arrives instead and spends his time sleeping and making a mess.
Nate, Gracie, Hadley, and Sam are all relieved when Katie returns from her trip. However, she soon learns that the Star Minder's production timetable has been moved up, requiring her to leave for a second two-week trip to San Francisco. Nate declares that he will no longer try to be like Katie, instead doing things his own way. He goes back to work, buys food and clothes from Walmart, gets a horse to stop Sam from bothering other kids at school, and offers benefits for doing chores.
However, this lifestyle becomes untenable. Nate tries to be at Hadley's spelling bee and a work event, failing to adequately attend either. He returns home to find Gracie hosting a party instead of studying. Breaking up the party, he upsets all his daughters.
Soon after, Keegan informs Nate that their horse is dead. Nate attempts to move its body, not realizing horses sleep lying down. This startles the horse, causing it to rampage and destroy much of the house before fleeing. Frustrated, Nate kicks a ball, hitting Keegan's roof additions, which causes the roof to collapse.
