So, the movie kicks off with our four couples arriving in the Bahamas for their marriage retreat. Sheila and her new husband, Troy, are the first to get there, followed by Patricia and Gavin, Terry and Dianne, and finally, Angela and Marcus. The men and women split up to chat about their marriages, the good and the bad. Things get interesting when Sheila's ex-husband, Mike, suddenly shows up. Angela, being Angela, immediately starts a fight until he leaves the women alone. Both the guys and girls are annoyed Mike's there, but they decide to let him stay.
That night, Mike talks about his past with Sheila, which really upsets Troy. In another awkward moment, Dianne accidentally calls Terry "Phil." Angela, ever suspicious, demands Marcus's phone password, but he cleverly distracts her with sex. Later, Dianne and Terry hear arguing and think it's Angela and Marcus, but it turns out to be Patricia and Gavin. Dianne checks on Patricia, who's upset but won't say why. The next morning, Mike apologizes to Sheila, admitting his past wrongs and saying he misses her and wants her back. Sheila, however, makes it clear she's moved on and is happy with Troy. On the beach, the women meet an elderly couple whose friend's ashes accidentally end up on Angela. Sheila invites them to dinner.
At the "Why Did I Get Married?" ceremony, Patricia drops a bombshell: she announces that she and Gavin are getting a divorce. Gavin is totally shocked and angry, walking away because he had no idea she was going to tell everyone.
Back in Atlanta, Gavin and his lawyer meet Patricia and her lawyer, Dianne, to discuss the settlement. They've agreed to split everything equally, but Gavin reveals Patricia hasn't declared her $850,000 book earnings. Patricia refuses to give him any of that money, and as she leaves, Gavin warns Dianne to tell Patricia to "prepare for a fight." Meanwhile, Angela's neighbor tells her about sexual noises from Angela's house when she's not home. Convinced Marcus is cheating, Angela confronts him live on his TV show, forcing him to give her his phone password. Gavin comes home drunk and confronts Patricia, taunting her about her lack of emotion, even about their son's death and divorce. He then assaults her, douses her in vodka, and burns their son's baby photos.
Elsewhere, Sheila asks Mike to help Troy find a job, and he agrees. Angela lectures Dianne and Sheila that all men cheat. Patricia changes the locks and catches Gavin, Terry, and Marcus moving Gavin's things out. She then discovers Gavin has taken all their money, including her book earnings, and trashes the house with his golf clubs in a rage. Angela comes home early, thinking she'll catch Marcus cheating, and finds a couple in her bed. After shooting up the room, she realizes it's just the gardener and maid. Terry finally confronts Dianne about her infidelity; she admits to an emotional affair and begs for forgiveness. Marcus and Angela fight, reconcile, then fight again after Angela finds another phone belonging to Marcus. Troy arrives at Mike's apartment after learning Mike got him his police job. Finding Sheila there, he angrily attacks Mike. Sheila tearfully confesses she's been taking Mike for chemotherapy and tries to apologize for hiding it, but Troy leaves her.
The women gather at Patricia's house for comfort. They realize their selfishness, lies, dishonesty, and inconsideration are ruining their marriages and lives. The next day, Troy apologizes to Mike, who forgives him and invites him for a drink with the guys, starting a new friendship. Mike tells the men to fix their marriages because life is too short. Later, Gavin is publicly humiliated by an angry Patricia at his job. As Patricia watches him drive off, Gavin is hit and gravely injured by an oncoming truck. While everyone waits for news, a tearful and regretful Patricia tells the wives to fix their marriages, and everyone makes up. The doctor then informs them that Gavin has died. The couples and Mike decide to hold a memorial service for Gavin in the Bahamas.
One year later, Patricia is leaving a university building when a colleague introduces her to a philanthropist, Daniel Franklin (played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson). Patricia initially refuses to meet him, but her colleague insists, explaining the university needs funds. Daniel tells Patricia her books helped him through his own divorce and invites her for coffee. The movie ends with Patricia smiling at him.
