What Happens (Spoilers)

The movie kicks off with young Justin Whitter vanishing while riding his bike, and Detective Greg Harper is put in charge. A green pocket knife found at the scene links it to old abductions by a now-imprisoned man named Cole Gordon. They try to talk to Tommy Braun, one of Gordon’s past victims, but he gets really upset when he sees them.

Meanwhile, things are getting weird at Greg’s house. His wife, Jackie, recently had an affair, making their son, Connor, resentful. Items go missing, a repairman says their daughter (who they don't have) let him in, and Greg even gets trapped in a closet by something unseen. Jackie’s former lover, Todd, visits, wanting to continue their affair. Jackie tries to end things, but Todd gets hit in the head with a pot, which Jackie thinks Connor threw. She hides Todd in the basement, promising to take him to the hospital later. As she leaves to drop Connor at school, she nearly hits Justin's distraught mother, who believes her son is alive.

When Jackie returns, she finds Todd dead, again assuming Connor is responsible. She tells Greg about Todd's visit and her theory, and they bury the body to protect Connor. Back home, Connor finds the missing silverware in the dryer and gets a strange message on his computer before a masked person appears behind him. Greg and Jackie then find Connor tied up in the bathtub with a green pocket knife. Jackie rushes Connor to the hospital.

Through flashbacks, we learn that two homeless people, Mindy and Alec, have been secretly living in the Harper house. Mindy has done this before, but Alec suggested this house and started messing with the family – taking items, locking Greg in the closet, and even peeing on him to make him think he wet himself. Mindy sees Greg murder Todd. When Greg and Jackie go to bury Todd, Mindy tries to tell Alec they need to leave, but finds Alec tying up Connor. Alec accidentally pushes Mindy down the stairs, hides her in Greg's car, and plans to drive away, but the Harpers return. After Jackie leaves with Connor, Greg drives off, unknowingly taking an unconscious Mindy with him.

Mindy wakes up in Greg's car and finds multiple green pocket knives and Justin's shirt in his bag, realizing Greg is the kidnapper. When Greg parks in the forest, she sneaks out and calls 911, but the call is cut short. She finds an old trailer where Justin and another missing boy are trapped. As she tries to free them, Greg knocks her out, takes her home, and shoots her dead, staging it to look like self-defense. Alec then attacks Greg, but Greg thinks he's knocked Alec out, so he stabs himself to make it seem like he was attacked by both. Alec regains consciousness, confronts Greg with his own gun, and shoots him dead after Greg tries to justify his actions by revealing he was a child victim himself.

Greg's lieutenant hears about the 911 call and sends Spitzky to investigate. Spitzky arrives, sees Greg dead, and shoots Alec in the shoulder. Spitzky then realizes he recognizes Alec. Jackie and Connor return to a house full of police. Spitzky finds the bag of evidence in Greg's car, and the two boys are rescued thanks to the 911 call's GPS signal. As Alec is taken to an ambulance, flashbacks reveal that a younger Alec Travers was Greg's other kidnapped survivor, and he targeted Greg's home for revenge and to stop him.
