Okay, let's dive into what actually goes down in "The Runner." The movie kicks off with Maia Marten, a prosecutor and a mum to her son Noah, who has diabetes, getting ready for a big court case against crime boss Tommy Boyd. She drops Noah at school, then goes for a run. While she’s running, she gets a shocking call from Noah’s phone – it’s an unknown man working for Boyd. He tells her he’s kidnapped Noah and has hacked her phone, so she can’t call for help or talk to anyone. He orders her to follow his instructions to get Noah back safely.
The Caller, as he’s known, directs Maia to a dumpster where she finds Noah’s backpack with a gun used by Boyd. He then reveals he’s put Noah in a diabetic coma using his own insulin pump. Maia’s mission? Run to the Excelsus Hotel, where a key witness, Radian Tafa, is under police guard, and kill him with the gun within one hour. If she fails, Noah dies.
Maia starts running, still on the phone with the Caller. He knows a lot about her, even about her colleague and romantic interest, Ted, because he hacked her phone. She tries to steal a phone from people passing by to text Ted, but can’t. The Caller starts asking her about her father’s murder, which was supposedly done by her mother. Suddenly, Maia gets hit by a car! She wakes up in an ambulance a few minutes later, but quickly jumps out and heads into the London Underground to save time, even though the Caller told her not to. While getting off the train, she realizes her phone has been stolen, so she loses contact with the Caller. She races the train to the next station, confronts the thief with her gun, which draws the police, and has to escape through an Underground tunnel.
When she comes out, police are looking for her, but she manages to hide in a church. She re-establishes contact with the Caller, who now plans to kill Tafa himself with a bomb. Maia then tells him a secret: *she* was the one who murdered her father, using a pistol she used for target shooting. The Caller gives her 15 minutes to reach the hotel and shoot Tafa. A policeman spots her while she’s crossing Waterloo Bridge, so she jumps off the bridge onto a passing barge, then leaps from the barge onto a jetty near the HMS Belfast. She finally reaches the hotel, goes up to Tafa’s 53rd-floor suite, and shoots him multiple times as the Caller watches. The Caller, who is a few floors above, pulls the fire alarm and leaves. Maia quickly finds Noah and gives him a dose of glucagon to revive him.
In the lobby, a police detective approaches Maia. He tells her the Caller is still nearby but doesn't arrest her. Noah then spots the Caller through a window, disguised as a paramedic! But Maia can’t get to him because the hotel is locked down. The Caller smugly confronts Maia, but then notices a very much alive Tafa being escorted out by the police. It’s revealed that Maia had used a stranger’s phone on the Underground and her lipstick to send a message to Ted and the police about what was happening. The police then gave Maia blanks for the gun, and Tafa’s "murder" was faked using blood packs. Maia admits she’s not a killer and fires a blank at the Caller, showing the police where he is. The Caller accepts his defeat as he’s arrested, and his bomb is defused. Boyd is convicted thanks to Tafa’s testimony. As Maia and Noah are driven home, Maia gets a call from an unknown number, but instead of answering, she throws her phone out the car window. Smart move!
