What Happens (Spoilers)

The story begins in a Southeast Asian city where journalist Matia is investigating a local child trafficking ring. Her husband, Navin, wants her to come home, but Matia pushes on. She finds trafficked children and tries to help one escape, fighting the traffickers. However, the leader, Paklung, and his dangerous lieutenant, Tak (who uses a kukri and bow), arrive. Tak brutally kills the child and captures Matia.

Months later, we meet Wang Wei, a mute handyman who is a widower. His daughter, Rainy, visits and wants him to return to China with her. Wei refuses, wanting to send Rainy back alone because child trafficking is getting worse, and he fears for his own safety. Rainy gets angry and runs off. She meets a limping Chinese boy who tricks her into being kidnapped by human traffickers, led by Ho. Wei finds and fights the traffickers, but they get away with Rainy. Wei tells the local police, but the police captain, secretly working with Paklung, stops the investigation. The police then find out Wei has a mysterious past.

Meanwhile, Navin is looking into Matia’s disappearance. He pretends to buy children from a trafficker named Song, who is Ho’s "father" and runs a fight club. Wei, remembering clues that link traffickers to Song’s fight club, also arrives. A trafficker recognizes Wei, leading to an attack. Song, spooked by the chaos, orders Navin killed. Navin and a hammer-wielding Wei fight off their attackers. Then, they fight each other, but soon realize they are both against the same enemy and decide to work together. They analyze evidence Navin and Matia collected, and Wei finds a new lead. They go to Song’s ice factory, where the children were supposedly kept. Wei and Navin violently defeat Song, his henchmen, and a sledgehammer-wielding Ho, but the children are gone. They torture Song using electricity, and he reveals the children were moved to a place called the "Snake Pit" and that Matia is dead. After Wei and Navin leave, Song tries to escape, but Paklung and Tak arrive and kill him. Ho later recovers and finds Song’s body.

At the Snake Pit, Rainy attacks a trafficker, starting an escape attempt by the children, though most are caught again. Wei and Navin arrive, fighting traffickers and reuniting with Rainy. Navin starts live-streaming the rescue on Matia’s account, alerting the public and police. They arrive at the Snake Pit. The corrupt police captain tells his officers to stop the public from getting involved, while more traffickers arrive to stop Wei and Navin. Navin tells Wei and Rainy to escape safely while he keeps fighting, but Rainy convinces Wei to help all the other trafficked children. The police captain is then overruled by his sergeant, Yadong, and the remaining police and public rush to help. Navin and Wei brutally stop the traffickers, allowing the public to save Rainy and the children. Yadong shoots a trafficker, saving the limping boy. The surviving traffickers are arrested, and the kidnapped children are returned to their families. Navin and Wei are held overnight in jail, with Rainy and the limping boy also at the station.

Paklung’s father-in-law, a criminal kingpin, tries to make Paklung take the fall to the police captain. Instead, Paklung brutally kills his father-in-law and his men, as well as the police captain. In his rage, he accidentally kills his own pregnant wife. Paklung and Tak then go to the police station for revenge, killing most of the policemen and injuring Yadong. Wei and Navin escape their cell to protect Rainy and the limping boy. As Wei and Navin fight Paklung and Tak, Ho arrives and attacks everyone. Tak admits he killed Matia. Navin suffers fatal stab wounds from Tak but manages to fatally bite Tak’s neck. Paklung kills Ho and knocks Wei out, but not before Wei delivers heavy, fatal blows to Paklung’s head. Rainy and the limping boy prepare to defend Wei, but Paklung collapses dead from his injuries.

One month later, Wei, Rainy, the limping boy, and Yadong scatter Navin’s ashes into the sea, also honoring Matia. In a flashback, Wei’s name is revealed for the first time by Wei to Navin while they were in the police jail. After scattering the ashes, Wei begins to tell Rainy his life story.
