What Happens (Spoilers)

So, the story kicks off in 1977 Detroit with John Miller, a Vietnam veteran and factory worker, finally finishing his probation. He's ready to settle down, even buying an engagement ring for his girlfriend, Sophia. John had previously saved Sophia from her abusive ex, Reynolds, who is a notorious drug-trafficking mobster. Unsurprisingly, Reynolds isn't happy about this. He pays off a dirty cop, Detective Savick, to plant drugs in John's car. Right as Sophia says yes to John’s proposal, he's arrested. Another detective, Kent, starts to get suspicious, but John is still sentenced to a whopping 25 years in prison. A heartbroken Sophia, feeling she has no other choice, ends up back with Reynolds.

Behind bars, John is constantly tormented by Reynolds, who meanwhile showers Sophia with a fancy house and an extravagant lifestyle. Kent, the suspicious detective, eventually figures out John was framed. He confronts Savick and even tells Sophia the truth. But before he can do more, Savick kills him. A furious Reynolds refuses to let Sophia leave him, trapping her. Meanwhile, John’s old army buddies, Youngblood and Singh, are busy planning his escape. They torture guards to get a prison map, which they cleverly hide in a coded letter for John. John, resourceful as ever, molds a shiv from hard candy, stabs a guard, and steals his uniform. Just as he’s ready, Youngblood and Singh arrive, breaking him out in a fiery escape that leaves several guards dead.

Next stop: Reynolds’s house, where John and his friends find a drugged Sophia and rescue her. Reynolds tries to shoot John, but Sophia bravely takes the bullet, dying in John’s arms. With the police closing in, John is forced to abandon Sophia's body, escaping with her engagement ring as a massive shootout erupts. Fueled by vengeance, John and his comrades arm themselves. They get serious, building homemade explosives and even improvised shotgun shells loaded with coins. John specifically crafts a special cartridge for Reynolds, one that contains Sophia’s engagement ring.

The three "brothers-in-arms" storm Reynolds's warehouse, massacring his men. It's a brutal fight. Youngblood is tragically gunned down, and Singh is fatally shot by Savick. Savick then attacks John in an elevator, using Singh's own knife. John barely survives a brutal fight, shooting off Savick’s leg. He then takes Savick’s corpse to the roof and dramatically drops it onto a car driven by Reynolds's henchmen, stopping Reynolds from fleeing. On the street, John shoots Reynolds in the face with his improvised shotgun shell. As Reynolds drives away, John leaps onto the car, and they fight until the vehicle crashes. But Reynolds, somehow, manages to escape.

The story then fast-forwards decades later. An elderly, wealthy Reynolds is living in an isolated mansion. He receives a chilling scrapbook of old newspaper articles from John, who has finally tracked him down. John infiltrates the mansion and holds Reynolds at gunpoint. Reynolds, surprisingly, declares that he loved Sophia. John's reply is short and powerful: he still does. Then, John shoots Reynolds dead, finally getting his long-awaited revenge.

This film really explores the lasting impact of trauma and the relentless pursuit of justice, even when it takes decades. It shows how love can be a powerful motivator for both good and evil, and how the past, no matter how distant, can always catch up to you. Ultimately, it’s a story about a man who loses everything and dedicates his life to righting those wrongs, no matter the personal cost.
