What Happens (Spoilers)

The story of "Lucky" begins in December 1944, during the famous Battle of the Bulge. US Captain John Castle, from the 324th Engineering Battalion, and his men from Charlie Company are given a crucial mission: block off a vital road. Their goal is to stop the German 1st SS Panzer Division from capturing American fuel depots, giving the rest of their company time to retreat. Sadly, while setting up explosives, Castle's squad is attacked by a machine gun nest and a passing German SS vehicle. Castle is wounded, and he becomes the only survivor.

Despite his injuries, Castle successfully completes his mission to block the road. Now, he's forced to travel back to friendly lines at Elsenborn on foot. He carries a field radio he calls "Lassie" and a pack of Lucky Strike cigarettes, constantly hiding from German SS units and fighting for his life when he's discovered. After barely escaping an artillery attack, he meets a man named Sgt. Bellingham. Bellingham claims he's carrying secret battle plans for the 99th Infantry Division headquarters. They decide to make camp for the night and manage to contact the 324th on "Lassie," who promise to send transport for them.

However, Castle's suspicions are raised when he notices Bellingham isn't smoking the Lucky Strike cigarette he shared with him in the way an American would. To test him, Castle gives Bellingham a standard operation instructions (SOI) code transmission he had written down. When Bellingham can't decipher it, Castle realizes he's a German spy pretending to be an American. A gunfight breaks out, and even though Castle is wounded again, he manages to kill Bellingham before he passes out.

When Castle wakes up, he's in a US field hospital at Elsenborn. There, he meets General Lauer, the commander of the 99th Division. Lauer tells Castle that his actions during his journey back to safety confused the German SS, delaying their attacks on American positions for several hours. This gave the US troops precious time to organize their defenses and also prevented the Germans from finding and targeting Lauer himself. Castle feels guilty about losing his men, but Lauer insists on putting him up for a Silver Star. While recovering, Castle reconnects with Cash, a soldier who had to leave due to combat injuries. Cash helps Castle regain his confidence and gives him his hip flask.

After the war ends, Castle, now a colonel, visits Rose Caldwell. She's the factory worker who built "Lassie." He shares his story with her and gives her a pension he blackmailed from her former employers, who had refused to pay her. This is his way of thanking her because "Lassie" kept him alive during his dangerous journey. Finally, Castle returns home to his family and is seen taking a fond look at "Lassie," which he kept as a treasured souvenir.
