The story begins with Jason Delgado, an unemployed engineer, out fishing when a strange storm rolls in. He rushes back to his suburban Seattle home, where he lives with his wife Ann, their two kids Graham and Ruth, and their dog Cassidy. But once they’re inside, they discover something terrifying: all their doors and windows are sealed shut, their internet and phones are dead, and their neighbors are also trapped, while others are stranded outside. Initially, the electricity and water still work. However, after two days with no change, Jason and Ann begin rationing food and water. They try to keep Graham and Ruth busy with activities, including simple survival lessons. As weeks turn into months, Ann starts an indoor vegetable garden, and Jason builds a system to reclaim water. Ruth, the youngest, notices a creature outside when it rains, believing it’s friendly, but her family dismisses it as her imagination.
Two months into their confinement, their neighbor Susan, an outsider, arrives at their house, screaming that no one is left before she’s attacked by one of the creatures. During a trapping effort, Ruth is bitten by a ferret and gets an infection. Desperate to get outside for help, Jason follows cracks in the house's floor and finds a new opening – the house is sinking, and the water barrier has shifted. Ann bravely uses the sewage pipes to reach their dentist neighbor Max Richardson’s house for antibiotics. She encounters a creature on her way back, forcing Jason to seal the opening behind her. Knowing the creatures will come for them, the family crafts weapons and sets up traps, hoping to escape.
The next time it rains, water floods the house through the pipes, forcing the family into the attic. A creature enters to attack them, but they manage to trap it. Jason is about to kill it, but Ruth insists he doesn't. At this show of mercy, the creature astonishingly opens the front door for them and tells the other creatures to leave them alone, just as the house collapses into a sinkhole. The rains stop, and the Delgados emerge to find Seattle almost completely submerged. The family finds a salvaged boat and sets off to navigate the now-flooded planet, eventually finding other survivors.
