What Happens (Spoilers)

The movie begins in a Southeast Asian city where journalist Matia is investigating a local child trafficking ring. Her husband, Navin, wants her to come home, but Matia finds trafficked children and tries to help one escape. This brings her face-to-face with the traffickers' leader, Paklung, and his lieutenant, Tak, who uses a kukri and bow. Tragically, Tak kills the child, and Matia is captured.

Months later, we meet Wang Wei, a widowed and mute handyman. His daughter, Rainy, visits him, wanting him to return to China with her. Wei refuses, worried about the increasing dangers of child trafficking and for his own safety, intending to send Rainy back alone. Upset, Rainy runs off and is lured by a limping Chinese boy into being kidnapped by traffickers led by Ho. Wei finds them and fights to rescue Rainy, but they escape with her. Wei informs the local police, but the captain, secretly working with Paklung, shuts down the investigation. The police then discover Wei has a mysterious past.

Meanwhile, Navin is investigating Matia's disappearance. He pretends to buy children from a trafficker named Song, who is Ho's "father," at his fight club. Wei, remembering clues that link the traffickers to Song's club, also arrives there. A trafficker recognizes Wei, leading to an attack. Spooked, Song orders Navin killed. Navin and Wei, armed with a hammer, fight off their attackers. They then battle each other briefly before realizing they share a common enemy and decide to work together. Using evidence Navin and Matia collected, Wei finds a lead. They go to Song's ice factory, where children were supposedly held. They violently defeat Song, his henchmen, and a sledgehammer-wielding Ho, but the children are gone. Wei and Navin torture Song with electricity, and he reveals the children were moved to a place called the "Snake Pit" and that Matia is dead. After they leave, Song tries to escape but is executed by Paklung and Tak. Ho later recovers and finds Song's body.

At the Snake Pit, Rainy attacks a trafficker, sparking an escape attempt by the children, though most are recaptured. Wei and Navin arrive, fighting traffickers and reuniting with Rainy. Navin live-streams the rescue attempt on Matia's account, alerting the public and police. The police arrive, but the corrupt captain orders them to stop the public from interfering. More traffickers arrive. Navin tells Wei and Rainy to leave safely while he continues fighting, but Rainy convinces Wei to help all the trafficked children. The police captain is then overruled by Sergeant Yadong, and the remaining police and public rush to help. Navin and Wei brutally stop the traffickers, allowing the public to save Rainy and the children. Yadong shoots a trafficker, saving the limping boy. The surviving traffickers are arrested, and the children are reunited with their families. Navin and Wei are jailed overnight, with Rainy and the limping boy also at the station.

Paklung’s father-in-law, a criminal kingpin, tries to make Paklung a scapegoat to the police captain. Instead, Paklung slaughters his father-in-law, his aides, and the police captain, accidentally killing his pregnant wife in the rampage. Paklung and Tak arrive at the police station for revenge, killing most of the policemen and injuring Yadong. Wei and Navin escape their cell to protect Rainy and the limping boy. As Wei and Navin fight Paklung and Tak, Ho arrives and attacks everyone. Tak admits to killing Matia. Navin suffers fatal stab wounds from Tak but fatally bites Tak's neck. Paklung kills Ho and knocks Wei out, but Wei delivers fatal heavy blows to Paklung's head first. Rainy and the limping boy prepare to defend Wei, but Paklung succumbs to his injuries and dies.

One month later, Wei, Rainy, the limping boy, and Yadong scatter Navin's ashes into the sea, also honoring Matia. A flashback reveals Wei's name for the first time, told to Navin in jail. After scattering the ashes, Wei begins to tell Rainy his life story.
